What Can You Sculpt Over With Pal Tiya Premium? (The Exoskeleton Method)
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make with Pal Tiya Premium is using too much material.
Many people come from working with traditional clay, where thickness equals strength. With Pal Tiya Premium, that simply isn't necessary.
Instead, think of Pal Tiya Premium as creating an exoskeleton rather than a solid sculpture.
For many smaller projects, I only use about 1/8 inch for the base layer and another 1/8 inch for my detail layer, giving me a total thickness of approximately 1/4 inch. That is more than strong enough for many sculptures.
Start With Lightweight Aluminum Foil
One of my favourite armatures to use is ordinary aluminum foil.
The trick is not to compress it right away.
Instead, think light and fluffy.
Create loose cloud-like or cigar-shaped forms and glue them together to build your sculpture. Once everything is assembled, use the back of a spoon to gently compress and refine the shape.
Starting with tightly packed foil only makes your sculpture heavier and uses more material than necessary.
I also keep the dull side of the foil facing out and the shiny side facing in.
Other Materials You Can Sculpt Over
Pal Tiya Premium can be applied over almost anything that will hold its shape while you're sculpting.
Some popular options include:
- Aluminum foil
- Styrofoam
- Wood
- 3D printed forms
- Wire armatures
- Existing objects that will hold their shape
The biggest mindset shift is to stop thinking about creating a solid sculpture.
Instead, think about creating a lightweight, weatherproof shell that becomes incredibly strong once cured.
My Advice To Beginners
Build lighter than you think you need to.
You can always add more material later, but you can't remove unnecessary weight once it's there.
One of the things I love most about Pal Tiya Premium is that it allows artists to create strong, durable sculptures without using massive amounts of material.
If you're new to Pal Tiya Premium, this one simple mindset change can save you time, money, and product.
