Reinforced concrete pallet base for a large Pal Tiya Premium outdoor sculpture

How to Build a Reinforced Concrete Pallet Base or a Inbuilt foundation for Large Pal Tiya Premium Outdoor Sculptures

How to Build a Permanent Pallet Base or Inbuilt Foundation for Large Outdoor Sculptures

When creating a large outdoor sculpture, one of the most important questions to ask before you begin is:

How am I going to move this once it is finished?

Large sculptures can weigh hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Without a properly designed base, transporting and installing the finished piece can become extremely difficult.

When working with Pal Tiya Premium, there are two excellent ways to create a permanent lifting system:

  1. Build a reinforced concrete pallet base and attach the sculpture to it.
  2. Build an inbuilt foundation directly into the sculpture using Pal Tiya Premium.

Both methods allow large sculptures to be lifted with forklifts, cranes, or lifting straps and can significantly simplify transportation and installation.

Option 1: How to Build a Reinforced Concrete Pallet Base

A reinforced concrete pallet base is a permanent foundation made from standard concrete and steel reinforcement. The sculpture is then attached securely to this base.

This is a great option when you want a strong, flat foundation that can support very heavy sculptures.

Step 1: Plan the Size

Decide how large the base needs to be to support the sculpture safely and prevent tipping.

Step 2: Build a Mold

Construct a simple mold using wood, foam, or other suitable materials.

Step 3: Create Forklift Openings

Build channels or openings into the underside so forklift tines or lifting straps can pass underneath.

Step 4: Add Reinforcement

Place wire mesh, rod mesh, or rebar inside the mold to strengthen the concrete.

Step 5: Pour the Concrete

Fill the mold with standard concrete, ensuring the reinforcement is fully embedded.

Step 6: Add Attachment Points

Create holes or install embedded anchors so the sculpture’s armature can be tied or bolted securely to the base.

Step 7: Cure the Concrete

Allow the concrete to cure fully according to the manufacturer’s recommendations before attaching the sculpture.

Step 8: Attach the Sculpture

Secure the sculpture’s armature to the cured base and continue sculpting.

Option 2: How to Build an Inbuilt Foundation with Pal Tiya Premium

An inbuilt foundation is built directly into the underside of the sculpture and becomes part of the finished artwork.

This method is ideal for sculptures built over high-density foam and for organic forms such as dragons, wildlife, public art benches, and fountains.

Step 1: Build the Basic Shape

Create the rough underside of the sculpture using high-density foam or another lightweight core material.

Step 2: Carve Forklift Channels

Cut two channels into the underside to allow forklift tines or lifting straps to pass underneath.

Step 3: Coat the Channels with

Pal Tiya Premium

Apply Pal Tiya Premium inside the channels to create strong lifting surfaces.

Step 4: Reinforce the Bottom Edge

Build up the lower edge with additional Pal Tiya Premium. A common starting guideline is a reinforced rim approximately 2 inches thick and 4 inches high, although larger sculptures may require more.

Step 5: Add Internal Ribs

Carve deeper channels into the foam wherever extra support is needed and fill them with Pal Tiya Premium.

Step 6: Add Mesh Reinforcement

Embed metal lath or sculpting mesh into the Pal Tiya Premium shell for added strength.

Step 7: Continue Sculpting

Once the foundation area is reinforced, continue sculpting the rest of the piece.

Step 8: Cure Properly

Keep the sculpture damp and covered for at least five days. Pal Tiya Premium continues to gain strength over time, reaching full cure in approximately 28 days.

Which Method Should You Use?

Choose a reinforced concrete pallet base if you want a separate, extremely strong structural base.

Choose an inbuilt foundation if you want the lifting structure hidden within the sculpture itself.

Both methods are excellent solutions for large outdoor sculptures and public art installations.

Why Planning the Foundation Matters

As Pal Tiya Premium co-creator Kim Beaton often says, the last thing anyone wants is crushed dragon toes.

Designing the lifting system before you begin sculpting helps protect the artwork, simplifies transportation, and can reduce installation costs for your client.
